What can cause a nappy rash?

Nappy rash can be caused by lots of things, from certain baby wipes and baby washes to nappies rubbing against baby’s skin.

It can also occur when baby isn’t changed frequently enough and their sensitive skin has been in contact with wee and poo for a while, so remember to change nappies regularly to minimise it.

See the NHS' latest advice on nappy rash here.

What can I use for a nappy rash?

Usually, diaper rash can be treated easily at home, according to the NHS.

If your baby has nappy rash, keep the area as clean and dry as possible.

You can also try airing out the area by letting baby spend some time without a nappy on.

To treat the rash, apply a thin layer of a barrier cream to protect your baby's skin.

Once you’ve started nappy rash treatment with a recommended nappy rash barrier cream, things should start to improve within three days.

Not every cream works for every baby, so it may be worth trying a couple out.

Avoid using soap, bubble bath, lotions or talcum powder as those contain ingredients that could irritate your baby's skin.

Can nappy rashes spread all over the body?

Nappy rash can take different forms: typically, you will see redness, spots or blisters.

Small red patches or spots may spread beyond the main part of the rash, and even outside the diaper area.

Call your GP, if the rash spreads to other areas, such as the arms, face, or scalp.

If your baby still has nappy rash after a few days – or if the rash has spread to other areas such as the arms, face or scalp, with white pustules forming, it may be a sign of infection.

Take your tot to the GP to check if they need a fungal cream (like Canesten) in addition to the barrier cream you’re using.

Where to apply nappy rash cream

Nappy rash cream can be used around the bottom area of the baby and should always be applied to clean and completely dry skin. With clean and dry hands, place a small amount onto your fingertip first. Gently massage into the affected skin using light movements, ensuring it is distributed evenly. Check and reapply every few hours.

Can nappy rash cream be used on face

While nappy rash cream has various soothing ingredients, such as zinc oxide, it is not a good idea to use on the face. This is because they are extremely rich and creamy and we have much larger pores on our face than on our bodies. This can then trap sweat and heat underneath, which is not so good for the face.

Can adults use baby nappy rash cream

Baby products are designed for sensitive skin and include ingredients such as shea, cocoa butter, jojoba oil and coconut. Whilst not recommended for the face these can help soothe rashes on adults as well as babies and can be beneficial for soothing the skin as a temporary measure. Pro tip: A little goes a long way.

Is nappy rash cream good for tattoos?

We’ve no idea how anybody came to discover this, but the answer appears to be yes.

A quick search of the internet reveals that nappy rash cream is widely recommended for protecting new tattoos. Some tattoo artists like nappy rash cream – Bepanthen seems to be a favourite – but others don’t.

If you’re unsure how to care for your new tattoo then ask at the studio while you’re having yours done – you should receive an aftercare leaflet also.

As with any cream, what works for one person may not work for another so if you try nappy rash cream for your tattoo and it leads to spots or blocked pores, then try a different brand.
