Marks & Spencer launches online service where customers can order ready meals delivered to their doo

MARKS & Spencer has launched a food delivery service online - where customers can get ready meals within an hour sent to their door.

Trials have begun in stores in Camden, north London and Woodley, near Reading.

People in a three-mile radius of the stores, who are hankering for an M&S special, can order groceries for delivery within two hours and a microwave meal in one hour.

There is a catch however - the minimum order is £10.

Delivery is free though, through partnered courier Gophr, but the Woodley store is trialling click-and-collect only.

The chain had resisted online ordering for home delivery but has now accepted that side of food shopping is booming, and has resolved to get involved.

A spokesman said: "We have started two small food online trials with selected Sparks members as we explore what works for our customers."

Steve Rowe, M&S' group chief executive, who used to run its food business, said earlier in the year: "We continue to review food online carefully. It has not cost us anything over the last five years by not being online with food.

"Our customers haven't moved yet, but they will and we need to ensure that we are ready with the right response."

Last month we reported M&S brought back its popular £10 dine-in meal deal - a favourite for customers looking to have an Indian feast without breaking the bank.

This time the flagship deal meant foodies could cash in on an Indian takeaway, with two mains and three side dishes.
